This class was probably the most different major-related
class I have taken at Drexel so far. Different in the sense that, there seemed
to not be one singular topic for the entire class. Instead it seemed as though
the content was ever-changing year to year as new developments are made in all
different fields. I liked how the class was new each week and I honestly could
not have guessed what we were going to dive into each class. Other classes may
continue to drone on and on about the same topics for a few weeks and it
severely hurts a student’s motivation for learning. I actually enjoyed going to
class and finding out about new technologies being used in the building and
construction industry.
I learned a lot about BIM in particular. At first, I was
confused as to how it all worked because I had only worked with AutoCAD for
modeling buildings. The in class information helped a great deal because it
explained how BIM can be used by all involved parties in a construction
project. It really helped me see the “big picture” of BIM and this class. The
homework BIM assignment using Revit to create a floor plan and roof system was
very helpful. I will be working at a bigger firm for my upcoming co op and I
believe they almost exclusively use Revit so I really enjoyed learning using
the videos and having each step explained. The Revit project was probably my
favorite part of the whole term. I also
liked the final project which seemed daunting but was not that bad. My groups
topic was very interesting to me and I liked how we had the freedom to choose.
Overall, I think Professor Mitchell does a good job of
administering the course. The material is not necessarily a concrete concept so
I liked how the professor did not take the course too seriously. Keeping the
tone lighthearted yet focused really encouraged genuine interest and
interaction. The one aspect of the course which I did not like but was not
difficult, was the blog posts. Many times the comment responses are forced and
awkward. Understandably, the posts should have a word minimum however sometimes
it seemed as though I and others were stretching the posts to be more wordy. It
is a minor complaint however and as a whole I thoroughly enjoyed the class and
the content.
