Introduction/Intelligent Buildings

My name is Harvin Bhandal. I am a junior in the BS/MS program pursuing civil and structural engineering.  I am from Rockland County, New York, which is located just north of New York City.

My hometown of Rockland County


Being in close proximity to New York City growing up and now Philadelphia at Drexel has allowed me to develop a deep interest in structures and engineering from these urban settings. For my co-op this past year, I worked at Transystems, a transportation and structural engineering firm. I worked in the bridge department and got hands-on experience performing structural evaluations on many different bridges in the Philadelphia area. I also had a fair share of design experience as well which as worthwhile. AE510 is my first architectural engineering course and I look forward to learning more about structures in terms of buildings as opposed to bridges. In my free time, I enjoy being active and love playing sports such as basketball and volleyball. Below is a picture of me on a recent trip to London this past winter break.

To me, an intelligent building is one that uses technology in many different aspects of its life cycle to improve the building's efficiency, cost, or human comfort.



















First Post: Introduction

     My name is Kunlun Ren. I am from China and I am a Ph.D. student in architectural engineering, second year here. I graduated from IIT, Chicago, with MArch degree. My advisor now is Dr. Simi Hoque. My interests include evidence-based design, green building technology, vernacular architecture design, etc.. Currently, I am doing a project on the impact of indoor environment conditions on patients health in CHOP. The main reason I take this course is to learn how to use Revit which will also be used as a tool for data storage and visual display in my project.

     The most interesting note I found in Evernote is a piece of news about Foster + Partners added a skybridge for the design of headquarters for DJI. The most exciting point is not about the building itself, but the ambitions of DJI and a conceivable future where building built by drones are also operated and connected by drones. Not only the building can be intelligent, but the whole city can also be intelligent with the help of AI, robots, drones, etc..

     From my point of view, the intelligent building should be defined by the whole life of a building from the proposal stage to demolishment. The site of the intelligent building can be chosen based on AI processed data; The design decisions can be made by architects with the help of AI; The building operation can be controlled by robots adaptively, etc.. In brief, the intelligent building is the building that is optimized in a system to face the best needs of occupants and any other people related.

About Alec Silverstone

Greetings! My name is Alec Silverstone and I am a fourth-year student at Drexel studying Mechanical Engineering. I am from Cherry Hill, NJ which is only 20 minutes from Philadelphia. The town is quite nice and represents a typical suburb of an even better city. A fun fact I always like to give about Cherry Hill is that its mall was the first indoor, climate-controlled shopping center east of the Mississippi River in the United States, and opened on October 11, 1961.

As you can see, because of its proximity to the city, Philadelphia was a large part of my childhood. From sporting events parades to school trips and tourist activities, I was in town every month growing up. I think that's part of the reason I chose to come to school in this city. I do have quite a few hobbies that span different areas of interest. In high school, I gained an appreciation for automotive design and engineering which drove (ha, pun intended) me to become a mechanical engineering student. I also picked up an affinity for electronic music of all types. From here, I experimented with electronic music production (and created a club at my high school for it) in addition to learning to DJ. Fun fact, I actually played a DJ set at a club in Philadelphia!

I also love alcohol. Not in a weird he-needs-help sort of way, but in a give-me-all-your-craft-beer sort of way. When I turned 21, I took a trip to Nashville, TN and visited a distillery. From there I really kickstarted my love for bourbon whiskey. I like to tell my friends that my collection is at 9 bottles right now, and it is ever-growing. I also learned to love beer (not Budweiser, I'm talking about craft breweries like Evil Genius, Alpine Brewing, Lord Hobo Brewing, etc) and I have actually started brewing my own beer at home!

Enough about me. That all pretty much sums me up. I'm pretty enthusiastic, and I'm a great schmoozer.

What do I consider makes a "smart building?" Simply put, I believe that a building that "feels" like it's in 2019 would constitute a smart building. I'm talking about one thats adaptive and up-to-date on technology. Interactive media screens that display relevant information, smart-thermostats, WiFi-controlled lighting, sun-reactive window shading, all the works. If the building can act to make the best accommodations for its tenants with modern tech and a clean look, I'd say it's a smart building.
Who knows, though? AE410 may change my view on that!

Introduction/Intelligent Building Definition

Introduction
 
My name is Nick Maloney. I am a junior pursuing a BS in Architectural Engineering and a MS in Civil Engineering. I have completed two co-ops thus far. My first was at Wiss, Janney, Elstner, Associates in Philadelphia. WJE specializes in addressing problems the built environment, so while there I was able to work on structures such as 30th Street Station in Philadelphia and the Federal Reserve Building in Washington, DC. My second co-op was with EwingCole, which allowed me to gain some Revit experience and be involved in the structural design process on various pharmaceutical, hospital, and technology building applications. When not busy with school, I spend a lot of time living and dying with the Philadelphia sports scene. I also enjoy playing basketball, fishing, and traveling. Below is a photo of a group of friends and myself on a recent trip abroad.

I think that an intelligent building is one that connects its various systems and optimizes their performance over time to promote efficiency for the occupants/owners.

About Me

Hello there! My name is Albert Hanan and I am a fourth-year student studying Architectural Engineering (BS) and Civil Engineering (MS) through Drexel's BS/MS Accelerated Degree Program. I am from Renton, WA a city just 20 minutes South of Seattle (by car). It's a nice city and it's within close proximity to a major city as well as some very scenic nature, as are many cities in Western Washington. Below you will find two annotated maps of Washington.

I have had two co-ops thus far, the first at Jacobs Engineering and the second at Larsen and Landis. At Jacobs Engineering I worked in the transportation department focusing on the I95/Pennsylvania Turnpike interchange project. While the company was great and my coworkers were very nice, the company was so large that by the end of my first co-op I decided that I would try my hand at a smaller firm and focus more on structural design. Fittingly, my next co-op was at Larsen and Landis, a very small structural engineering firm in Fishtown. Here, I gained experience in drafting, structural design, and professional report writing which was truly invaluable. For my third co-op, I have accepted a job with EwingCole in their structural department. While not as large as Jacobs Engineering, EwingCole is a mid-sized engineering firm based in Philadelphia with offices in New York, North Carolina, and California.

That's me

When not in the classroom I enjoy playing basketball, playing guitar (not very well), and hiking. Last term, a friend and I decided that we enjoyed talking about basketball so much that we'd create a podcast about it. It's called Sorta, Kinda, Basketball. Neither of us has much podcasting experience, and we're not experts on any one subject, but we have some decent banter. We're going to try to get more episodes out this term (the end of last quarter got very busy for both of us, postponing new episodes). If you want to check it out, here's a link. Or don't. Whatever you'd like to do is okay with me. That's about all there is to know about me, if you ever want to say "hey" don't hesitate, I think I'm pretty friendly. Again, if not, that's okay too.

I personally define an Intelligent Building in today's world to be a building that utilizes digital intelligence to dynamically interact with the building's inhabitants and environment to better the user experience. I think the most important aspect of this definition is the fact that the systems must be dynamic, adapting to the environment and user. This can be done through artificial intelligence, machine learning, the internet of things, etc.
