Week 4 Blog Post

I think that the future of the AEC industry will be as predicted in Bill Allen’s The Future of BIM Will Not Be BIM – and It’s Coming Faster Than You Think or it will be pretty close. One of the things that he talked about in his speech quite extensively was programs such as Dynamo and Grasshopper. These programs allow for more algorithmic and programming solutions to designs in Revit and Rhino. I definitely agree that these programs will be a large part of the future of the AEC industry. I say this because of my experiences at my second co-op. At EwingCole there was a Revit Training Tuesday seminar every week that delved into some Revit topic that was not as common knowledge or common practice as the standard techniques. I would listen in on these seminars every week so as to grow my Revit knowledge base. One of the weeks the topic of choice was Dynamo and what it could do. At the time I did not know the extent of the software so I did not realize how powerful it really is. After listening to Kaity Hould’s speech and Bill Allen’s speech I can see that there is incredible power behind it. If some firms are using it today and can showcase the benefits of it to more firms overall I think that it will really take off in popularity. As this popularity rises, I think we will see more uses and creativity in the use. Having only a limited amount of people using these programs has generated fantastic results. Once it becomes mainstream, which I think will definitely take place within the next ten years as Bill Allen predicts, we are going to have so much more brain power and thought expended on these programs. This will cause a massive up swell in functionality as people discover new uses that current users had not thought of yet. While I think that the Dynamo/Grasshopper aspect of the AEC industry will be achieved in the next 10 years. I think it will take longer for AI and robotics to be properly integrated into the industry.

I cannot agree more with your thought that Revit training will be prioritized a lot more in the next 10 years. I used Revit at my last co-op but still would say that I am a novice/intermediate in terms of skill. There are so many features within Revit that many people either do not know about or do not know how to use efficiently. I think that training people on all the features will result in a more efficient AEC industry as a whole.

I also feel that data sharing will be an important part of the future of BIM. There is such a large push for connected buildings and analysis of potential issues that can occur in real time. I believe we will see very potent increases in data sharing in efforts to make this a more concrete reality.

I agree that BIM has an incredible number of uses in the AEC industry. I also agree that many people today do not know how to use it or prefer other solutions. I think that in the industry in the next 10 years we will see a push to educate the industry in the uses of BIM. I think it will be a snowball effect and will result in an even greater, more efficient industry.

  1. Richard, I am not familiar with the programs Dynamo and Grasshoper but as you mentioned in the future it will be good to keep an eye on them. I feel that Revit has a vast potential and it is good that you could grow your knowledge of it while on co-op. I am a little skeptical on the use of these programs in the next 10 years but agree that robotics is farther off.
